Oxytocin – the
‘feelgood’ hormone

Oxytocin is a substance that is produced in the brain. It is well known for its hormonal actions in conjunction with birth and breast feeding, as it stimulates contractions of the womb during the labour and helps eject the milk during breast-feeding. It has been used clinically since the 1960ies and is applied as injections, a drip or nasal spray.

Recently oxytocin has been shown to have many additional functions in the brain and also locally in the body. For example, it has been shown to increase the rate of healing of wounds and to restore atrophic vaginal mucosa.

Oxytocin is the active ingredient of Vagitocin®. The oxytocin gel is administered in the vagina to exert local healing effects on the vaginal mucosa.

After several alarm reports about the increased risk of breast cancer, thrombosis, heart attacks and strokes connected with the use of estrogen during menopause, many women have searched for alternative treatments. This is where Vagitocin® may be used as an alternative in the treatment of vaginal atrophy since it is based on oxytocin and is free from  estrogen.
